Montana has parlayed his Hall of Fame football career into a string of successful businesses/promtions for other businesses. He is an American sports icon.

Beckham has hardly played in games and won't be seen until 2008. His impact in the U.S. sports scene must be graded as Incomplete, but he will never, ever be as popular as the top athletes in pro baseball, football or basketball.

Joe Montana and its not even close. Soccer players (no matter how good they are) don't hold a candle to NFL superstars in terms of popularity here in the US.
