not for me cuz I listen to everything...I just love the music...and that goes for things besides just hip-hop....I mean I am a hip-hop head at the core but a music lover at heart...so if u just listen to hip-hop or rap whatever u wanna call it...u should expand ur horizons...

conscious rappers are like Mos Def, Common, or Dead Prez and gangsta rappers are like soulijah boy tell em. Mos Def talks about life in brooklyn and black people. Common raps about the chi-city and the nation of islam. Dead Prez talks about stuff u can only hear when u buy their cds bcuz most of the things they say the media, the radio stations and the country will never ever play. bcuz they r talking about real things about back people and the past that we had and futures we r soon 2 have. so who u listen to really reflects how you define yourself. with soulijah boy tell em tell us that we need to do a dance called da superman and do it on a hoe? what that says to me is that i really dont know what im saying as im singing this song like i don have a brain and ima use hoe at da end of every sentence? U choose wat u want to hear

and one level we listen to what we can relate to,
counscious rap listeners or anyone for that matter can relate to the subject matter of alternative rap, simply becaue its on a broader social level...

gangsta rap listeners
listen can relate to whats being told through the storys of these artists.


then again on completley different level
we listen to what appeals to us
a conscious rap listener may be a gangbanger who leans more to the awareness of the artists.

the gangasta rap listener
may have a suburban life style and the shoot em persona may take him to a world that hes only heard about.

the mainstream rap listener.
may be from a broke or middle class family and the rims cars girls chains and jewelry may very well be what appeals to him


so i would say that

yes and no

on one level yes it does say alot about your character
on another level its all about what appeals to you
