i thought the answer would be common, but i can't seem to find it in any articles on the internet. so, just out of pure curiosity, how DOES eyesight go bad? like, im pretty sure there's something that has to do with sitting too close to the tv or whatever, but what really happens? do the muscles get worn out or something? and is there no way to completely fix your eye without lasik/glasses/contacts? im just curious, since i knew i had 20/20 vision in the 5th grade but 4 years later...it's just reallly bad.

Genetics can have a lot to do with it. If your parents have bad vision, it is very likely that you will too. Also, astigmitisms can cause bad vision. As people age, their lenses harden, causing eyesight to decrease. That's why so many middle-aged people have to wear reading glasses.

Wow, yeah, that's not very smart at all. I'm assuming your living with your parents so your not thinking of how much money it will cost. Glasses are not cheap. It is very selfish of you to think "Oh well, it's not my money". Believe me, I've had glasses before, they are nothing if not a pain in the you-know-where. Some chicks look cute in the right pair of glasses and maybe that's why your thinking about this, but just do what the others suggested, buy a cute pair of frames and no prescription glass in them. Again I'm assuming your teenage, but even so, that is no excuse for not thinking things through and not thinking ahead. Do you really think, (if you did somehow make your eyes worse) that you would look back at the decision 20 or more years from now and say, "Boy am I glad I did that!". My advise to young people...think things through. Don't worry about what would look good today, think about how this decision will effect you 10, 20, 30 years, or more, down the road.

The eye can get longer leading to nearsightedness
The eye can get shorter leading to farsightedness.
The lens can get distorted, astigmatism
The lens can get clouded, cataracts.
The pressure inside the eye can increase eventually destroying the nerves, glaucoma
Excess focused light can burn the nerves, as when looking at the sun without protection or welding
A blood vessel can break, loosening the nerve bed and putting it partly out of focus
A blow to the head or high blood pressure can loosen the nerve bed or put junk in the fluid in the eye messing up vision.
There are people who claim exercises will change the focus of the eye, but these claims notoriously are shown wrong. Exercises are used for eyes that look off in the wrong direction - like lazy eye, cross eyed, or wall eyed, in conjunction with special glasses.
