if the child does not come to school with their own supplies, and then the teacher has to foot the bill for something the parents should be doing, etc.
then yes, its alright....at the end of the class, they get their shoe back and the teacher gets her pen back for someone else to use, as well...
even in banking you have to put up collateral to take out a loan...durh!

No, that'd be stupid. Nothing wrong with going barefoot -it is NOT unsanitary or unsafe as the previous answerer suggests, I've been barefoot for over ten years, my feet are fine and I've looked up a lot of information about going barefoot. But to set such a requirement for necessities as books or pencils would be weird. Kids should have their school supplies regardless of what they are wearing on their feet.
Even if you mean borrowing something when they've forgotten their own school supplies, I still think that requiring any item of clothing or footwear in return is wrong. Some people are just as uncomfortable without their footwear as I would be wearing it, and while bare feet that have been bare don't smell, feet that have been cooped up inside closed shoes for hours may produce a stink, too! If you absolutely need an item in trade, have them give you something else like their phone, another book, whatever.

Actually, I think it is a safety hazard and should be reported as ridiculous. A child walking around on that cold classroom DIRTY floor is unsanitary to me. I think the teachers should come up with a different (sanitary) action than that. Maybe have children who are not prepared with pencils or books do an extra assignment for homework. I guarantee that will discourage them from forgetting their utensils or whatever they've failed to remember to bring to class.

lol one of my teachers made ppl do that last year, its kinda stupid but i guess it makes sence. ppl never give back the pencils they borrow and the teachers r constantly giving theirs out. no student would forget to give it back if they dont have their shoe. although its sooo unfair to the ppl who hav to smell the stinky feet...yuck!

If you were a carpenter and came to work everyday without your tools, would you still expect to get paid? Bring your materials.
