Now that Petraeus is making national policy, isn't that just one step away from military dictatorship?

I see what you are saying. Since most people who are savvy in foreign policy and war have stated that this war can't be won by military means alone, but diplomacy and the political process are necessary to achieve the goals, we are still only taking the advice of the military as to how to go forward with the war and virtually ignoring the most important part, diplomacy. Meanwhile, the terrorists multiply and as soon as we draw down the troops, the terrorists and insurgents will come back..

Earth to Karl!!!!! Why not. He is there!!! Are you? I'm more sick of the politicizing going on from both sides of the isle than the recommendations of a General who was respected by both sides until the other side decided they didn't like what he was saying. For the Democrats, the war can never go good because it will hurt their chances of capturing the White House. They have done everything in their power to hinder the war at every turn. You have seen what happens to Democrats that support the war. By the way, if that is happening, talk to the democrats who have power in the House and Senate with about a 23% aapproval rating. Maybe the liberals shouldn't be up moveon.org's a$$ so much.

I do not agree with the premise of your question. The President is in charge of foreign policy. The general is in charge of running the fighting in Iraq.
The US will not have a military dictatorship.

this president wants to be a dictator and feels that now he is in office he can and will do what he wants to do this is just one more step out of the pages of the Nazi war book as in Hitler's rise to power and the way he duped the people of germany when you go back in history and see how it occurred there you can see the similarities here
