I think it has to do with the angle the sun hits the equator. I do know it has nothing to do with the distance though

The equator is the only part of the Earth over which the Sun reaches 90 degrees (straight overhead) in the sky. It also sees the Sun for half the day year round, so it gets more sunlight than anywhere else on Earth.
