If you know what you're doing and the system hasn't been open to air and moisture, you can get a rebuilt compressor for about $250 and a R-134 conversion kit and do it yourself. A shop will insist on replacing condensor, accumulator, expansion valve, and other stuff you might or might not need, and you won't escape for less than a grand.

If it suffered "black death" when it failed, it's an expensive job of at least $1500. My advice is to not fix it on an old car. It's not worth it. Just roll down the windows (if they still work). If it's only a bad clutch and doesn't need a new compressor, then it's a lot cheaper and worth fixing.

The labor can vary depending on the auto shop. To save money, get a compressor from your local salvage yard.

Don't fix it.
Get an used one on a junkyard.
Buying a new one would be a waste of money, on a 1992 explorer.
