Call you local scrapyard and ask if they will take them
many will if the oil is removed and you can make a little money off the scrap
many landfills also will collect them in an appliance dedicated area for a nominal fee

It may be considered a hazardous waste item similar to refrigerators and televisions so call your local refuse company or even your cities main office for the proper department. Airconditioning units and the compressors themselves have many chemicals that will leak out if not disposed of properly.

Check with your municipality.......requirements vary.
Most reguire at least purging of the freon by a certified technician, who officially tags as such. If that is the requirement, that tag will be required before any scrapyard or disposal company will accept it. Around here, if you deliver the unit to the shop, purging runs around $20-$30...IF IT IS A NEWER UNIT WITH A PURGE VALVE. If there is no valve, figure another $50.00 or so for them to install a valve to do the purge

Call a heating and A/C company. They have to drain and collect the freon before you can recycle the copper tubing. It's illegal (in California, anyway) to discharge freon into the atmosphere and recyclers won't take the old metal unless the system has been drained.
You can call a hauling company to take the unit away, or just the parts that you don't recycle.

if you have already removed the compressor from the system and recovered the refrigerant, then throw them away. or use them as a boat ancore. it is the same thing as any other eclectic motor, just heavier.
