I need to purchase sheets of mylar to preserve newspaper. Where can I find this and what thickness do I need?

Your newspaper would be well preserved in a good archival quality frame with UV glass or even plexiglas, on acid-free paper backing. Even if you could find a mylar sheet that big, it would be impossible to maneuver the paper onto it smoothly.
