When I was a child, I had to use my imagination alot to enjoy
playing outside, or even inside. I made mud pies when it
rained and had tea parties, and played with paper dolls. I played "Annie, Annie Over" with neighbors and a ball. Or we played school, doctor, dress up, & in tree houses with a minimum of things. We didn't have many store bought
toys. Those were not necessities. So what we got for Christmas, had to be taken care of to last.
I remember later as a teenager, our dad bought a croquet
set, and that was a big deal for us to play in the backyard.
Times were changing, and soon we'd even have a colored TV.
But the 40's thru the mid 50s' were more times of struggle for many families. So I'd like to hear, how it was for just we seniors having to rely on improvising and using our imagin-
ations to have fun during those times.

I almost forgot to add hopscotch, and
jumping rope. I remember we had songs
we sang while jumping rope and counted
how many times we jumped (or skipped).

Make it Right, do you mean a shuttlecock instead of a ball, to play
Badminton? Or Raquetball?
And Patty, do you mean, "I Spy with my
eye", a so and so, which had to be guessed? I'd forgotton that one.
Now I'm trying to remember how that
Rover game and some others were played LOL.
It's fun going down memory lane, isn't it?

Yes, I played all those things you mentioned, because we didn't have computers, TV's or any of that new technology, and so we had to rely on our imaginations. What I and my friends did was to reenact scenarios. We played house, doctor, school, war, and pretended to be adults. Sometimes we would put on a "show" for our parents, with singing, dancing and dramatizations, complete with costumes and scenery. We were quite creative for as young as we were. Afterwards, we'd all pile into the car and go for a "ride", with no destination in mind, but invariably, we'd stop and get ice cream. That was the highlight of the evening. Ah, yes, the good old days. I do miss them. Thanks for the memories.

P.S. I think the name of the game that other person couldn't remember was badminton.

I also played a lot of the same games.....but my favorite, or what I remember the best is; I would rake the leaves into the floor pattern of my house of the future. It was fun walking thru the front door and going into different rooms. Then I would just lie down and look at the clouds and try to figure out what they reminded me of. Those were the good days...... I loved to play outdoors in the summer before dark, playing red rover, red rover, come over, and then throw a ball.
I loved to play jacks on the front porch with my friends.

My favorite board game was Monopoly. Always fun and still is. I think my aunt used to let me win. I loved the game outside with the net, and the ball that you hit with the racquet, (not tennis) but the other one. My kids liked that one a lot when they were young. Duh. Can't remember the name of it.

The best part was we felt safe and did not have to worry about locking our doors at night. We could leave the windows open and let all the wonderful air make the curtains billow.

We were really lucky to have those memories and that time in our life feeling secure. Somebody please remember the name of that game I mentioned.

I remember meeting the other kids in town at the old schoolhouse playground after supper. We would play hide and seek until dark !!! In the winter we would all bundle up and take our sleds to Lloyd's Hill where someone had a pile of old tires burning and we would sled down the hill. Broke my wrist there one year. Then there was roller skating !!! The ones you put on your shoes and adjusted with a key !!!! Then there was fall where we all raked leaves in a pile and jump in !!! I use to rake leaves into square rooms and make doorways leading from room to room or into a hallway I raked . It was my leaves mansion !!!! I spent hours and days in that thing making it bigger and bigger !! ... lol My Dad would take us to pick up black walnuts from somewhere. He would lay them on top the pump house to dry !! We would sit around the table and pick the sweet nut meat out and Mom would put them in toll house cookies and her famous Applesauce cake at Christmas !!! Then in the summers !!! Swimming everyday after lunch until it was time for Mom to make dinner. We went to the river, lake, ocean, bay, there was water everywhere !!!! We were never inside !!! Always out doing something !!! And we use to get a drink of water out of the garden hose and we survived without bottled water !!! Now I know why I am so depressed !!! ... lol

We played marbles and jacks but the best was skipping rope. We could have the rope right across the road as not many cars came along

There was a game called "ISee' where one said the color of something they saw and the others had to guess what it was. I remember going to the neighbors house to watch television before my family got one. We also made up a few games of our own and had lots of fun.
