I read alot of posts on this site that claim Jeter is a terrible fielder and is rated in the bottom 5 of MLB for "range factor", yet these people never show any proof ar give a link to see the stats. I know that it exists, but am just wondering if these fans have looked at it or are just repeating something that they heard at some point and have taken it as being the "truth".

ok, so I see that Tejada is 1st in "range factor" but he's last in "zone rating". It seems to me that these stats are very far from an exact science. Who judges which balls are in the zone? Probably the home team's official scorer that hates Derek Jeter.

Baseball reference.com has range factor for all players. There is also a glossary to tell you what the stats mean. Here's the link for DJ's:

Jeter's range factor IS below the league average, but that doesn't make him a bad shortstop. He generally doesn't muff up balls he gets to (fielding percentage) and what he lacks in range he MORE than makes up for in offensive production. His on base percentage, slugging, on base+slugging, batting average are all WAY above the league average. The haters always need something to break down Jeter because they're envious of him. ANY single one of those people would LOVE to have Jeter on their team. Besides when you have A-Rod at third, you don't NEED to have super range.

You can go to MLB.com and choose the "stats" option from the home page. From there you can go to sortable stats. (http://mlb.mlb.com/stats/sortable_team_stats.jsp) The menu on the left lets you choose what you want (fielding stats, American/National/MLB, position, etc.). Jeter has one of the lowest (i.e. worst) Range Factors of everyday shortstops. Only Harris on the Devil Rays is lower in the AL.

Jeter has a 4.77 career Range Factor (RF)

Nomar Garciapara has a RF of 4.55 as a shortstop.

A-Rod has a career RF of 4.63 as a shortstop

so Jeter is not as bad as haters make him out to be. He has better range than Nomar, and even A-Rod.
