Lets say that you dug a hole in the ground (mountains) that was about 10 feet deep. could you put an object in here, and then somehow surround it with glass? Like, would you use layer after layer of sand heated up with fire? Or what? How would this be done exactly?

To answer 'Smarti-Marti' No. This is not Saphira. LOL. this is CayleeJo!

AND AS A NOTE. I'm an author. I'm writing a book (a fantasy) and i'd like this object to be encased forever, as a sort of monument... of its greatness. So, since it's a fantasy they have powers (they control the elements, air, water, earth, and fire) so things would be a bit easier for them, ya' know? Please don't comment on my spelling/grammer, I get enough of that in the 'books and authors' section of this site. Lol.

Therefore, my point is that I'm not actually going to do this... it's for my book! THANKS

Since this is fantasy and your characters can manipulate things, have them encase it in some crystalline gemstone. Sapphire, for instance, is aluminum oxide, which is an extremely tough material, very heat resistant, and doesn't burn (diamond, being pure carbon, does burn, although not very well). Similarly, emerald, ruby, etc. are all variants of aluminum and other alkali earth oxides. Tough stuff chemically, and they have that romantic appeal.

Ahhh, but you want a plausible way for your elementals to make it. Well, you can air-grow sapphire (see below). So your air elemental keeps the object and the molten sapphire airborne while your fire elemental heats the alumina (aluminum oxide that forms the sapphire crystal) to melting and adds it to the object. You could probably use this method for other gemstones, but I didn't look for air-growing synthetic rubies etc.

A graven object encased in pure sapphire? Cooolllllllll!!!!!

Put in a damsel in distress I can identify with saving and I would read the book. :-)

If the original object could withstand the extreme heat that is needed to create the glass then I guess it could be possible, you would need something that would not burn or melt when exposed to very very high temperatures. It probably wouldn't work in just normal ground either, you probably need a metal coating around the hole or something or drill into rocks instead of dig into dirt. Then you would need something much hotter then normal fire, you would need a glass furnace. Once this all works you would just end up with some hunk of metal inside 10 ft of glass so I'm not sure it would be worth the time. Just don't try this at home.

It is called vitrification - surround the object with electrodes and give it all a zap to heat it up - if the soil matrix surrounding the object was appropriate and the object could withstand it, it would be encased in glass like substance... Not likely to be clear though...

Are you Saphira? :-)

Sure, just pour molten glass into the hole.

You're not going to be able to turn sand into glass, if that's what you were thinking. Making glass is a bit more complicated than that.

Encase it in glass first and then put in the hole.

what are those neato sand sculptures that are created when lightning hits the ground and fuses the sand and soil into fantastic shapes?..yeah... fulgurites!!............ bet your fantasy folks could call down lightning to do the deed......here's info...
