I wish I knew more physics of helicopters. I do fly R/C helis though. I don't really like to think that the tension is causing the lift. If you were to think about a wing of an airplace and look at the lift distribution across the wing, the lift at the root is greater than the lift at the tip. It usually follows a parabolic curve and it produces zero lift at the tip. Anyways, the pitch of the blades should be the angle of attack that the airfoils see. Wish I could elaborate more on it but my wife is here to pick me up. Have a good one.

Well, the picture of Donkey in the middle doesn't help much, but this is the basic idea behind the diagram.

It is a picture of a helicopter if flight showing all the different external forces at work on it that will influence it's over all movement.

The tensions mentioned are the tensions in the wires connecting the blades to the rotor. On a helicopter, these tensions balance out to create no net force on the aircraft.

The circular motion of the rotors causes a net lift applied perpendicular to the blades.

The term "mg" refers to Mass times the Gravity constant. This implies the net force upon the aircraft caused by gravity.

"ma" is the equation for net force (Force = Mass * Acceleration) This was found by comparing the lifting force of the rotors to the downward force due to gravity to discover in which direction the aircraft will accelerate and eventually move.
