ps thank you for your reply but my cichlids prefer the light and stress out when it is off so the idea is to create a happy medium a light lit bottom will allow my cichlids chill out whilst letting the others sleep the gravel will only be put in the areas where my keyholes sleep. thank you

You should give your cichlids a "moon light"! Moon lighting is very common with saltwater tanks. All you'll need to do is get another strip light for your tank with one of the special bulbs. It is a dark blue light that will not keep you awake, but will allow your fish to see.

Some people bootleg the operation by securing outdoor, dark blue Christmas lights to the top of their tank, apparently it works almost as well.

Glow In The Dark Pebbles

I've only seen the glow0in-the-dark substrates for reptiles, not for aquatia. I'm not sure how safe these would be to use in water.

I also don't think these would be a good idea - fish often orient themselves according to the direstion of the light - that's why they're a darker color above and lighter color below - so when viewed from above, their darker backs blend into the substrate, but if viewed from below, they blend in with the lighter colored sky/clouds. Except, of course for fish that spend their lives upside-down like some catfish - they have the colors reversed.

I can appreciate having "jumpy" fish though, especially ones that are new. Something I've done in the past is to use a small-wattage bulb (often a night light) with a light blue Christmas light as the bulb and suspend this over the tank as a sort of "moonlight" - even before the LED "moonlight" devices became popular.

I'm not sure where do buy them, but don't you think it would annoy the fish? I mean, fish sleep on the bottom of the tank with their eyes open. It would probably make it harder for them to sleep.

My advice would be to NOT get glow in the dark gravel (or pebbles, whatever.) If you still want a bright tank, you can buy exotic coloful types of gravel that make an intresting looking tank.

I have some glow in the dark ornaments , they glow under black light too . I haven't seen any pebbles ,but if you find some post it please . I got the ornaments at of all places ..Wal-mart. The glow does seem to bother my fish and I have over a dozen different species in a huge tank.
