x^2 - 2x - 80
x^2 - 10x + 8x - 80
x(x - 10) + 8(x - 10)
(x-10)(x+8)

In order to factor this equation, you must find two numbers that when you multiply them you get -80 and when you add them you get -2.
So, what are the factors of 80?
1, 80
2, 40
4, 20
5, 18
8, 10
You can see that 8 and 10 have a difference of 2, so those are your numbers. But you need one of them to be negative, since the multiply to give you -80. So, you need to figure out which one gets the negative sign.
Now, in order to get -2 by adding the numbers, the larger number (10) would get the negative sign.
So, the numbers are 8 and -10.
Your factorised equation is (x + 8)(x - 10).
Use the FOIL method to verify that this is correct.
x^2 - 10x + 8x - 80
= x^2 - 2x - 80

They have all given you the correct answer but it will be nice to know how.
If the coefficient of x^2 is 1 then you look for two numbers which when multiplied together to give -80 which implies that one of the two numbers must be positive and the other negative. When you add the two numbers you must obtain the coefficient of x which is -2 which implies that the larger of the two required numbers must be negative
The numbers required are -10 and 8 so that -10*8 = -80 and -10+8 = -2. x^2 -2x-80 = (x-10)(x+8)

x^2 - 2x - 80
x^2 - 2x + 1- 81
(x-1)^2 - 9^2
(x-1+9)(x - 1 - 9) (since (a^2 - b^2) = (a+b)(a-b))
(x + 8)(x - 10)
