directly in ice, it would not have lasted that long.. the amputated part should be wrapped in a clean sterile dressing and placed inside of a plastic bag.. the packaged part should be kept cool... you want to keep the part cool, but not freeze it... it should last a few hours to 1 day, but not much longer because your body would start the healing process and would reject the part...

A lot depended on how it was cut (clean, ragged, partially) and how clean it was kept. A few hours is the norm but if the surgeon decided on waiting for swelling to subside, it's his choice. Keep in mind he has to work on tendon, muscle, vein and bone, as well as tiny nerves and blood supply, so it's not an easy job. It was good that it was kept on ice (milk is the next best choice) so you may have a normal looking hand. Good luck.

Why didn't you ask the doctor who reattached it while you were there?
