for example: unit for velocity is m/s and it is derived from basic units for length (m) and for time (s)

Hi,
Derived units are units that are derived from a set of basic units. For example in the SI system of measurements, two of the basic units are meter for length and second for time.
Some units derived from these would be these:
area - m²
volume - m^3
velocity - m/s
acceleration - m/s²

A derived unit....

A derivative is an item / something that has been obtained from something else..

e.g Diesel is a derivative of Oil

Petrol is a derivative of oil

Sunseed oil is derived from sunflower seeds

So this can be the same for many other things.

Sugar is derived from sugar beet
