The printer most likely uses a USB cable to connect to the computer. Just connect a USB cable between the printer and the computer. You may need to install drivers from either the CD that came with the printer, or from the HP website.

This is a bit vague. What kind of connection do you have on your printer? Are you trying to connect it directly to your laptop? Do you have the correct cables? If it's USB, it's quite simple:
1. Download the drivers from the HP website for your specific printer.
2. While logged into your Sony Vaio, plug in the printer.
3. If the Add Hardware wizard does not come up, open the Printers and Faxes utility in the Control Panel, click on Add a Printer, and follow the steps for installing a local printer.
Otherwise, we'd need a bit more information than what is being given here.
Good luck!

That depends what connections you have on each.
USB: This is usually the easiest way to connect them. The USB socket on the printer will probably be a type "B" socket, a different shape to the usual sizes (see here for the different types of USB socket: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usb). If this is the case, you'll only need the right cable. If both devices are USB 2.0, make sure it's a new-ish cable to get top speed.
Ethernet: A lot of new printers have an ethernet connection, and can be connected to a broadband router. This is useful if you want to network the printer.
Older printers rely on LPT, which isn't featured on most laptops. Often, there is such a port on docking stations (but don't buy a docking station especially for this!)
You can buy cables that adapt USB to parallel port (another name for LPT) for less than £10 from places like Amazon and e-Bay, which might be a bit costly considering the price of printers these days, especially considering that older-style printers can tend to be pricey for cartridges.
Before you spend any money, make sure you have, or can download, the drivers for your printer!

Decide whether you want to connect with a parallel cord or USB, order the appropriate cable from Sony (or CDW). Go to Printers in the control panel, click on add new printer, insert the HP disc into the CD Drive and follow the directions. Use LPT1 for the parallel and usually other outlet for the USB when the Sony Prorgram asks for the connection of the (non network) printer.

Without knowing the model of your sony, the model of your printer and whether the printer is allready connected to another computer no one can give you the answer you need. If you will post them the correct answer will be too.

Turn the printer on but dont plug it into laptop. Run the installation software which should tell you when to plug it into your laptop. If it doesn't tell you, restart your puter after the installation completes then, with puter on, plug your printer into the USB port--your OS should then see it and install it. New printers usually dont come with USB cables so, if thats what you're asking about, you'll have to buy one if you dont have one laying around.
