Isn't there some sort of switch like device that you can install so that when you want your exhaust to be loud it can be but if you want you can turn it to a quieter version??

Sorry, really not an automotive fanatic but have a question that needed answering. Kind of a debate :D

Thanks everybody

Yes its called an "exhaust cut out"
They are very common among drag racers (mostly pro-street) to keep the exhaust semi quite on the road so they dont violate local sound and emissions laws and they open up the cut out on the strip...But you loose about 5ft pounds of tq when using them because of the reduced back pressure

Q-tec makes a cut out that is a electrically opened butterfly valve. The electric motor opens up the cut out butterfly the exhaust becomes very lould and closes normal sound. While Illegal in most every state they can be used for off road, Wink wink nod nod....Back in the 60's we used push pull choke cables and heat riser valves to accomplish the same thing.

Well yes there is.
If you are into making your own. http://www.mallcrawlin.com/forum//showthread.php?t=6453
Vette and Mustang Cobra have internal systems to open at full power...$$$$$$$$$$$
If you do a search there are electronic cut outs that can be installed and are proportional.
Or...in JC Whitney a cable operated cut out.
Have fun!! and Good Luck....Hope this helps your side of the debate!!!

Some exhaust systems come with removable silencers...want it quiet? Attach the silencer...I dont want one but it seems pretty easy.
