What they did was combine parts from The Two Towers in the end of the first movie, and into the beginning of the second movie. They did this because of cost.

They almost did this for the new LotR movies. Peter Jackson was going to make 2 2 hour movies, thank god they went with New Line Cinema who allowed the full 3 movies at the length they are

Ralph Bakshi, who made the rotoscoped animation Lord of the Rings movie, ran out of money and ran into length issues so he had to release a chopped down version.

Rankin-Bass who did The Hobbit cartoon did Return of the King. I'm not sure why Twin Towers was skipped over, though I imagine it might have been a rights issue and had something to do with Bakshi hoping he could return to the LOTR and finish it at some tim.

Yes, THE LORD OF THE RINGS was first adapted to film and released in 1978 as an animated feature from Ralph Bakshi.

I assume the books were condensed into one movie because of cost concerns.

From what I remember, they tried to combine the whole story into the 1978 animated movie. It has been a long time so I don't remember all the details.

I guess making it depended on getting funding to do it.
