I don't know if any of these were best sellers or not, but I can tell you some books that I have really enjoyed. I am in the process of reading Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice, which is really great so far and certainly pulls you in. It is literally the story of young man interviewing a vampire and learning all about his life.
Kindred by Octavia Butler, the story of a modern black woman who is sucked into the antebellum South to save her white ancestor from dying. It is a really interesting story.
Nothing Like the Sun by Anthony Burgess is a fictional account of Shakespeare's life and the possible inspiration behind some of his work. Also, Blonde by Joyce Carol Oates, which is a fictional biography of Marilyn Monroe. I loved her writing style, and it was a really fascinating account of a rather tragic life.
One of the very best books I read in college was The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner. It is the story of a family in the south after the civil war told in four different voices. The style is complicated but really interesting, and I liked it a lot. I also loved The Long Goodbye by Raymond Chandler, a noir mystery set in Los Angeles.
The two series by Jasper Fforde are tons of fun to read. The Thursday Next series begins with The Eyre Affair, and the Nursery Crimes series starts with The Big Over Easy.

Well a suggestion is start with books by some of the more popular authors out right now like James Patterson, Sandra Brown, Patrica Cornwell, John Grisham, Nora Roberts, Johnathan Kellerman etc....Find out what style of writing appeals to you. Do you like romance, action, thrillers, mysteries? Depending on your taste, any of these authors should appeal. Also look to the classics if you want to expand your reading IQ. Again choose from an author like Louisa May Alcott, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie, Nathaniel Hawthorne and the like.
And my best advice get a library card and go to the library! No money spent unless you love the book! Enjoy a great read soon!

My favorite author is Jodi Picoult, and in my opinion, all her books are great for anyone above the age of 16. She deals with a lot of tough issues including molestation, teen suicide, relationships, murder etc. She is the best! I would suggest you read 'The Pact: A Love Story' and 'My Sister's Keeper' first. Those are the ones that made me want to buy all of her books (which I have yet to do, but I will one day!)
Other great books:
Always Six O'Clock by Phoef Sutton (Mystery/Suspicion/thriller! couldn't put it down!)
Killing Me Softly by Nicci French
And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie
And James Patterson has some really good books! All are mystery books.
Dean Koontz is great.
Happy reading!

The George RR Martin series, "A Song of Ice and Fire." First book is A Game of Thrones.
The Anita Blake series by Laurel K Hamilton first book is "Circus of the Damed" This series is good through about book 8. Then not so good.
The Tremaire series by Naomi Novik. First book is "His Majesty's Dragon."
Kim Harrison's books are pretty good.
All of the above are Fantasy/Alternate reality books. Every one really sucks me in and won't let go.

Both Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte and Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen sucked me in immediately. They both have the advantage of being timeless stories for anybody of any age.
If you like intense stories that have either horror or intrigue or fantasy, read The Oath by Frank Peretti; House by Frank Peretti and Ted Dekker; Term Limits by Vince Flynn; Dracula by Bram Stoker; The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde; Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson or any Stephen King or Dean Koontz novel.
If it's romance or regular drama, read Prince Charming by Julie Garwood or The Sherbrooke Bride series (The Sherbrooke Bride; The Hellion Bride; The Heiress Bride; The Scottish Bride) by Catherine Coulter (her other books are good, too). Mary Jo Putney has two different series that I loved - The Fallen Angels series (Thunder and Roses; Petals in the Storm; Dancing on the Wind; Angel Rogue; Shattered Rainbows; River of Fire; One Perfect Rose) and The Silk series (Silk and Shadows; Silk and Secrets; Veils of Silk). Or read anything by Rosamunde Pilcher.
For mystery/romantic suspense read anything by Agatha Christie, Mary Higgins Clark, Mary Stewart, Phyllis A. Whitney or Victoria Holt.
