How do I contact college football coaches regarding playing and introducing myself?

My grandson wants to play college football. We want to write letters to the coaches of the schools he is interested in. Is there any free resources that will tell us how to go about doing this?

Your doing the right thing.

You need to put together a portfolio for him, a little game film, a resume that includes his academic record. Send the coaches a personalized letter with a schedule for his team including his uniform number. Invite them to come see him play.

Work with his counselor in school. Hopefully you are doing this before his sr. year in HS. Should be done his Soph./Jr. year if you are hoping to get a scholarship.

I know a girl who did this in my daughters high school for field hockey. She wasn't necessarily the best player on the team, but sent out these packages to some target schools. She just got notice about 2 weeks ago from a Div 1 school that they are going to offer her a scholarship. Other girls on the team didn't do anything, they and their parents falsely assumed that the coaches would find them. Even though the coaches showed up to watch this other girl, they never took interest in the "better" girls on the team. In the end, there were multiple schools, including Boston College interested in this girl.

Try contacting the parents of any other kids in his school that are playing college ball. Talk to his football coach. Try talking to the recruiters at a college.

Get some video, stills, everything you can get your hands on of your kid. Build a promotion portfolio. Take him and the portfolio, and go to the schools you like. Find the coach and talk to him. START promoting the kid early.

This stuff takes time and money. Start early... like in the 10th grade. Go see the coaches every year. Get to know people, assistants, secretaries and anyone close to the program.

A LOT of good kids are underexposed. DO NOT wait for him to be scouted, especially if you are in a small school or far from the the university you want him to attend.

Scouts are like all the rest of us. They don't really like to be away from home if they can find players close by. You gotta show your prospect to them in what ever way you can.

Coaches are drawn to a known quantity, so do the qualifying work for them by letting them know you and the player. That's how you do it... If he has the skills and natural talent, you can him him noticed.... good luck.

If he's playing high school football, try talking to his coach. High school coaches have some pull wth college coaches in the same area. College coaches will rely on high school coaches that they have developed relationships with from recruiting in previous years. If the kid wants to play at a certain school, try taping his high school games and send the tapes of his games, or edit the tapes with just his highlights, to the college coaches.

Are you from a small town with no football program or a small unnoticed high school or private school team???? Scouts usually do a good job of finding the talent they are looking for, but some super talented kids from nowheresville are undoubtedly getting passed over. I don't know of any resources but you can call, write letters, apply for admission and even ask counselors at the university(s) of choice. Good luck to your grandson!

It's probably smarter to actually visit the school and talk with the coaches one on one. If thats not an option then e-mail the school asking for a number or try the university homepage for contacts.
