Given their reaction to sunlight, a vampire could operate an "icebreaker" - a ship specifically designed to cut passages thru the ice to facilitate shipping. This could explain why he is rich, because icebreakers are worth their weight in gold to shipping companies during the winter. If he owns his own ship, then he is the Captain, and also responsible for plotting his course thru the treacherous ice without running aground. Once you get past a certain point north, the nights last a really long time, and during the polar winter the sun might not shine for months. Ideal conditions for a vampire - but only if you can work around their lack of body heat. That far north, in bitter cold, whatever moisture their bodies hold would freeze, rendering them incapable of movement as they would be one giant ice cube. If you assume that they can "burn" blood for certain magical effects (called Disciplines) then they should be able to keep themselves warm, but require constant feeding to replenish their supply. If the crew is in the "know" as to the Captains' true nature, then they could be a willing "herd" or "ghouls" - human servants who benefit from their association with the vampire - he feeds on their blood, a little from each so no one is drained, and he rewards them with monetary gain or by letting them drink his blood - which doesn't make them vampires, but does allow a degree of loyalty and rapport unlike anything else. Otherwise they could use battery-powered heated underwear or long johns to maintain their body temperature.

He can work at Lloyd's of London insuring ships or better yet, investigating shipwrecks. He could be like a Banacek for the Lloyd's. Then he would know all about ancient shipwrecks and missing ships and basically the whole history of shipping.
