California has also attached a special ban on 16-18 yr old drivers, from using anything that takes their hands from the wheel and their attention from the road, since their incidence of accidents while on cell phones or texting is dramatically higher than any other age group by comparison.
Would you support a ban like this in your own State?

It may not be a whole answer by any means, BUT it's a terrific start before things get anymore out of hand than they already are.

I agree with almost all of you. We SHOULD be more responsible and deal with our own issues without government intervention, but you fail to see that people are dying right and left and THE IRRESPONSIBLE parties just keep on doing whatever they want.
So I appreciate my CA Gov and legislater joining up with other States in the union to combat the stupidity of thos among us who ARE NOT responsible.
Banning hand held cell phone useage doesn not prohibit hands free usage, but it makes test messaging a moot point doesn't it. Like I said it's a real good start and there are lots more issues at the door coming our way that are being packed into vehicles. If we start controlling the cell phones and text messaging, then it'll be a lot easier to combat the next wave.
As for teens 16-18...........sorry but you should be thankful you can even drive at all your age much less have cell phones or anything else in a vehicle while you're driving.

Yes, I would support a law in my state to ban cell phone use while driving. I've been behind too many people who are weaving between lanes or speeding down the highway with their eyes focused on their phones.

Seat belt use laws were unpopular but have saved many lives. I think a ban on cell phone use while driving would also be unpopular but I'm sure it would also save many lives.

I live in California and I think that it is criminal to
drive and use the cell phone at the same time.
The only ones who oppose the new law are young
people who think that accidents don't happen
to them, and the manufacturers of cell phones.
Unfortunately we'll have wait until next July before
the law will nail the potential killers!

It's already against military base regulations to be using a cell phone and driving by ANYONE.
And with nimrods like MISSY who TEXT MESSAGES AND DRIVES? YEEE GADS, how STUPID can anyone be? I came up behind someone one day who was weaving all over the interstate and even ran off onto the shoulder. I thought the person was drunk. I went around them to get way from them and when I came alongside, the person was leaning over holding the cell phone to her ear, writing on a note pad! There was a company name and phone number on the car. I got home, called the company and described the car and the driver. The person said, "Well, she won't be doing THAT anymore." I hope the ignorant child got fired! She could have killed someone because of her stupidity.

Although I don't like government control on any of our rights,
this one does need to be a law, due to people not adhearing
to the warnings of talking and driving. I have heard the request
that we are supposed to pull over to the side of the road, and
use our phones, rather than traveling and talking. When you
hear about the many incidents of accidents due to the distrac-
tion of talking and driving, it makes one think that if we allow
these people to be complacent on the requests, then to make
our highways safer, we need to have a law enforced to make
them stop. I can't begin to count the people we drive by in a
freeway lane, who are talking as they drive. It is like one out of
four anymore. So it's become the popular thing to do. And not
just while in a traffic snarl. It's even driving along at the speed
limit. So something does need to be mandated, to make
the roads a bit safer.

Everyone should be banned unless they are using hands free type. Look anyone with a cell phone is guilty. The deal is when we are answering, dialing, talking on a cell we are not totally focused on driving! I remember when the issue was radios in cars. People were taking there eyes off the road to adjust the dials (yes...dials) LOL!

I don't know if I would fully support it. If a driver is using a hands free phone I think that is okay. That would be no different than speaking with a passenger that is in the car with you.

I don't like seeing people with a phone up to their ear while driving. It is distracting and can actually impair your vision if you have to turn your head, I would support a ban on this one.

We already have that law here in Aussie and yeah it is a good idea. Over here they don't even want you to use earpieces. The powers that be say any phone calls while driving are dangerous because they distract you and you cant give your full attention to the road.

We have a law in NJ, but most people are still on the phone and drive. It is a secondary offense, which means that you cannot be pulled over for talking on the phone, but can be ticketed if caught speeding and talking on a non-hands free cellphone.

I support is 110%. People should not be holding a phone in one hand and talking driving at the same time.

I think all cell phone usage should be banned, not just kids. As a pedestrian, I have had more close calls with people on phones than anything else. I think they should only be used for emergencies and with the Onstar connection becoming popular, do we need phones?

I support the law. There's a movement afoot to get just such a law passed in Virginia.

I nagged my daughter about driving and talking until she finally got a headset.

It still doesn't erase the distraction, but at least both her hands are on the wheel.

Edit:
Mildred S -- see the response from Missy. That's an accident waiting to happen.
