Because your hymen is most often just a RING of tissue surrounding the entrance of the vagina, NOT a covering. If you feel around down there, you will find that your vagina has an entrance (as it should), and this is so menstrual flow CAN pass.

your period comes from eggs that are stored in your body
and are released one at a time every 28 days or so as a general rule. this egg on its way out, if fertilized with sperm from a male then will become a baby, if not you will get your period, your hymen has nothing to do with the eggs being released. sexual intercourse on the other hand will have an effect on your hymen.
good luck girls

A normal hymen doesn't cover the whole opening.

This is hard to explain, but there are some illustrations at the link below that should make it pretty clear.

Because the hymen doesn't completely cover the vagina. There is a hole that allows menstrual blood to come out and a tampon to go in.
This link has alot of information about the hymen: http://coolnurse.com/hymen.htm

Your period has nothing to do with your hymen. It does not have to be "broke" in order for you to have a period.

You will still have one even if it isn't broken. I don't think it's technically ...covering the vaginal opening. Because you can still use tampons, but when you have sex for the first time, you still have to 'break' the hymen.

You must've skipped that day at school! The hymen isn't seal-tight!

Do they not teach this in health class anymore? I was told that it is not completely "sealed" it still allows your menstrual flow to come out. It was explained to me that it has a "hole" for that. I dont know exactly how it works.

the hymen has a small opening in the center of it that allows drainage of blood and mucous produced by the bartholin glands......don't you kids learn anything in school anymore?
