Short term, recreational use usually isn't a big deal. But when used over a long period of time, problems accumulate.
Think of what 30 years of sedentary smoking plus the munchies can do to your body. There are all kinds of things - obesity, high blood pressure, sleep apnea and much more - that this lifestyle can lead to.
More than that - cannabis induced psychosis is beginning to be recognized and studied all over the world. Basically the paranoia and delusional thinking get more and more pronounced.

I've had a lot of health care professionals and former users tell me that their maturation basically stopped when they started smoking pot. And a 48 year old behaving like a 18 year old is not a pretty sight.

Self medication is never a good thing, if you are having problems find someone you trust to talk things through. The truth is you can become "hooked" on weed as a means to assist you through things you would be better off working through. Using it to take care of depression will only put off the fact that sooner or later you will have to face the problem that is bothering you, and by the time you face it, the problem could be worse than when it started. Each time you smoke weed you could have a different reaction, depending on the source of the product, and is time in jail worth a funny story, I bet none of the crowd will be laughing at how you got busted.

Smoking weed is one of the least harmful of drugs. Certainly a lot safer than drinking alcohol or smoking cigarettes. There are a couple of downsides to smoking including: Bad munchies, you just want to eat lots of junk!!!. Also, they don't call it the gateway drug for nothing....some people start with smoking pot and get wrapped up with the wrong people who are doing things like crystal meth, crack, cocaine, heroin, or taking prescription pills for recreational use. Terrible drugs which I hope you will never touch because they are a one way ticket to a downward spiral...
I believe cannabis was put on the earth as a gift, to be used in moderation as a spritual tool. It is excellent for people in pain (cancer, aids, chronic aches and pains, anerxia) and also used to treat depression. Much better for you than prozac or some other pill that makes you a zombie.
If you are curious, try it for yourself for your own reasons and not because you feel peer pressure. Hope this helps and always be safe :)

it actually puts you at a higher risk for using other drugs. I started by smoking pot. Then I was talked into using acid, mushrooms, ecstasy, coke blah, blah.
You eventually think, well I did pot and it didn't do anything and rationalize using more drugs.
I am 29 years old and I know many people that smoke pot. They smoke it morning and night. They can't function without it.
I find it repulsive and pot makes me paranoid and have panic attacks now. That's another reason why I wouldn't do it anymore.
And Ephriam....it is not legal in Jamaica. It is tolerated more so than here, but not legal.

Firstly, do not announce yourself in public saying you smoke weed which is ILLEGAL. Secondly, if youre depressed, NEVER depend on drugs to help you.
also, Marijuana isnt really as bad as they say it is, it can cure many things and is a medical herb, used for medicine for some people. Spend less time on smoking and more time looking for fun, friends, girlfriend. Hang out with friends that you feel are good friends. You dont always have to talk about it with anyone but its always good to let it all out. If you really like smoking so much then you still need to learn to make money so you can fly to amsterdam and smoke all you want!, so good luck!
Yoga is a good way to cure your body too, as much as it might seem like something that makes you look ridiculous, it really helps you heal yourself

I'm in highschool too. I know what you mean. Many of my friends have tried it, or have been 'on it' for a while. We have decided as a group to not mess with drugs/weed. I've never done anything drug or weed related. It kills off brain cells making you lazy/sluggish/tired. It smells terrible- I know because I have to sit w/ the druggies and pot heads in Art. It has more long term effects than stuff you see straight away. Doing it once a week will get you hooked.
Best of Luck with your life!

The single most important thing is that it is illegal. Why don't you run a marathon, learn a trade, something positive. Do something important to earn a scholarship to college. If you get caught and have it on your record you won't go to a great college. Volunteer at a hospital, raise money for cancer. Drugs take away from the "real high" of Living!

Hmm...the short-term memory loss was the worst part for me -- i HATED the feeling of being in the middle of a conversation & then completely forgetting what you were talking about! The munchies are another downside -- unless you're really skinny & need to put on some pounds fast! It makes your mouth super dry, & can make you kinda lazy, yeah, that's true, but it won't cheer you up if you're depressed -- it might do the opposite. My best advice is -- DON'T BOTHER.

I used to do all sorts of stupid things when I was younger, like smoke pot...and it got me NOWHERE. When I quit everything, my life got on track fast.
So, from someone who has been on both sides...weed can make you paranoid, lazy, stupid, boring, (same lame stories...booorrrring), forgetful, smelly, increases anxiety and depression, apathy, affects fertility, distorted perception, loss of coordination, trouble with thinking and problem solving, I could go on.
The point is, you don't want to do it. How lame is it do do drugs because your friends pressure you? Or that you can't fix your problems on your own? Don't be a coward.

To answer your question, weed can cause short term memory loss, paranoia, increases the heart rate, impairs your reflexes, can cause severe respiratory infections, and a lot of other things. Don't let your friends use peer pressure on you. You are who you are. If you really pay attention to what your friends are saying, I'll bet it is just a bunch of stupid junk that doesn't make any sense.
