Right now, the United States Congress is considering passing two bills, the Stop Online Piracy Act and the Protect IP Act. If these bills pass, then it gives the United States Government the right to block any website that they believe is supporting online piracy. A "blocked" website will be unable to be accessed from within the United States. Several websites that allow users to post free content will be the first to go, because anyone can post a link to pirated software. As such, several of these websites, including Wikipedia, oppose these bills. There are still some supporters of the bill, and so Wikipedia is showing this to those people, to prove that the bill will cause harm to the Internet, in hopes that Congress will reconsider these bills.
