There isn't really a "method" to get a part you want. Too many things come into play--your talent, the director's vision for the part, and yes, sometimes it just comes down to who they like or have worked with before. All you can do is indicate your interest in that particular part on your resume or form, choose an audition song that is similar to the character you want to play, and hope for the best. Sometimes a director has a certain vision for a part and your audition might go perfectly but you're just not what they're looking for in that role. One other good bit of advice--don't turn them down if they offer you a different role or a role in the ensemble. If you show them that you are a trustworthy, talented member of their group instead of a diva who only wants certain parts or won't do the show they will look more favorably upon you the next time you want a certain role. Sometimes you have to "put in the time" and prove yourself before you will be considered for specific roles.

If you have a chance to read the script before the audition, that would be a good idea. If not, show up a little early so you can read the script & study your character.

Also, a good audition technique is to really listen to the other person. If you make the scene about them & not about you, not only will it result in a better performance, it also alleviates a lot of the nerves.

Most importantly, just to have fun! Acting is fun & everyone wants to work with someone who enjoys what they do.

It is a better attitude to just want to help the play be good. And not care what part you get. Follow the good advice above, shun the bad advice and just do it for fun and to serve the church.

show your personality and do your best. Plus, it never hurts to compliment the director or whoever's casting the play. Others may see it as kissing up, but believe it, it flattery takes you a long way. =]
