One that came to mind was Screaming Trees, hardly given any credit, while other grunge bands such as Pearl Jam and AIC got all the glory.

Can you think of any bands that would have/could have been bigger if not for these "pesky" popular bands?

Some bands that weren't really hair bands go tlumped into the hair band genre, and I think it hurt their popularity.

Tesla
Kix
LA Guns

Three great bands that never reached the heights of the Motley Crue and Poisons of the world.

My Sisters Machine. The grunge movement overlooked them. Other than AIC, they were the best band to come out of Seattle in the 90's.

Also, King's X were overshadowed by the hair metal and then the grunge movement of the 80's and 90's.

Cracker could've done so well, but they were overshadowed by Nirvana.

Ten Years After, and Sugarloaf played at Woodstock, and horribly went downhill after taking a loss to popularity, people were interested in Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones.

Alan Parsons Project was as good as Pink Floyd, yet Pink Floyd took the glory along with Led Zeppelin, and Deep Purple.

there were many great bands in the sixties and seventies, who were overshadowed by the Beatles. Although these bands were very good, They could not compete with the Beatles song writing. The same goes today. The bands with the song writing capabilities or a good song writer, who writes music to suit ther style, will always get more radio airplay, If there more widely heard, they sell more albums.

Good question!

I do think a band called Big Star could've been much bigger in the early 70s had it not been for their hugely successful contemporaries Badfinger & The Raspberries.

Uriah Heep, Flash & a host of other 'lesser' rock bands of that same time frame were overshadowed by guys like Deep Purple & Yes.

I absolutely agree, Screaming Trees were great as is Mark Lanegan's solo stuff. I''m a big fan of the late 80's/early 90's indie/alternative/whatever the hell you want to call it scene and to me the most overlooked band was one called Seam. Sebadoh and Pavement were the indie critic's darlings but I feel Seam was as good if not better than all of them.

Well, The Kinks were definetly overshadowed by the Beatles and The Rolling Stones but the Kinks were an amazing band that deserves more fame than they have.

The Manic Street Preachers should have been bigger, but other bands like Blur and Oasis were more popular at the time.
