I'd like to believe as much, because that's the mentality I would hope would be common among all people who share similar political ideologies to mine. However, while I believe that most of the conservative banter I've read on these forums has been destructive rather than constructive, liberal arguments are not so much better. Sure, there's a good few people online that actually make decent arguments and try to make these forums worthwhile, and quite possibly that number is more than that of the conservatives. However, I see far too often that Bush is a fascist pig with Hitleresque ideas, a statement which only manages to reduce our debate to mudslinging. I've seen plenty of claims from conservatives that people are just plain stupid, and it annoys me to see those same arguments coming from liberals. Neither side does an overall good job of being decent people on YA, it's a minority on both sides that say things that are worthwhile.

Here is part of the definition offered by an online dictionary

Liberalism refers to a broad array of related ideas and theories of government that consider individual liberty to be the most important political goal.[1] Liberalism has its roots in the Western Age of Enlightenment.

Broadly speaking, liberalism emphasizes individual rights and equality of opportunity. Different forms of liberalism may propose very different policies, but they are generally united by their support for a number of principles, including extensive freedom of thought and speech, limitations on the power of governments, the rule of law, the free exchange of ideas, a market or mixed economy, and a transparent system of government.[2] All liberals – as well as some adherents of other political ideologies – support the form of government known as liberal democracy, with open and fair elections, where all citizens have equal rights by law.[3]

Am I an equal or am I better than X?

The class system is one in which the Conservative party seems comfortable

But here is the catch that they never mention - If I am better than X - I must therefore be less than Y -

Ahh the class system that we live in and actively deny -

Many are from well to do families and observe others have not had their good luck, and so want the poor to be enriched by handouts. They also are young and have not yet observed that wealth is created by those who study, then work, then save, and finally invest. They are sent to colleges where the teaching comes from people who get that position because it concurs with the beliefs of the prior generation of teachers, going back through generations of teachers ever since the 1920s. Thus they think they are doing good, and this is a plus.
But the young folks who were poor but did not adopt indolence promised by politicians seeking continued office by promising free prosperity, instead know that rewarding indolence creates more indolence and punishing endevor means less endevor, with the results a poorer national economy that hurts us all, especially the poor.

Thank you! I'd curtsy, but might fall off my chair :-)

I just saw an interesting question about 'liberal' and 'conservative' morality that was very interesting! Basically, that there are five categories of 'morality' in society and that liberals tend to place morality of the individual higher, while conservatives tend to place Here's the link to the article:

Compassion, understanding, listening, thoughtful, fair, honest, broad minded, non-judgmental, etc. are all traits of those people seeking knowledge and equity. While this tends to apply to more "libs" than "cons" it is still a trait that people of all persuasions can and do exhibit. I strive for decency and consider myself a decent person before and above a "Liberal". And therein lies the difference, many (not all) conservatives consider themselves a conservative above all else.

I really think you'll find that the leadership and the media play to the divisions of the parties despite the fact that about 80% of the American citizens fall more towards the middle of the road politically!

It's strange. I remember as a kid being taught that debate and having educated choices was a good thing!

How have we gotten to a place where if you have a different opinion you're a traitor?

I personally say that there are large numbers of idiots on both sides of the spectrum. Unfortunately I have yet to meet a conservative on this site with an open mind, though I am sure there must be one somewhere.

I try and thank you. Sometimes I miss the mark. I think we have a grasp on the Golden Rule. I think that we also understand that our actions and words have a ripple effect thru out the universe.

I agree that many people on here are really good people.
I'm sure there are a LOT of Democrats on here who DON'T support what the extreme left is doing. I'm sure there are many on here who DON'T subscribe to moveon.org's radical views. I'm sure there are plenty who support our troops...
just like the majority of Muslims aren't Islamic extremists.

I think they're probably just not as vocal denouncing these things as the Leftists are in supporting them

I believe that people should be judged on individual behavior, I also believe there are just as many good conservatives as there are any other group.
