I find it impossible to name just one film! There were hundreds of truly awful films, but it was a decade that's notable for some remarkable movies. I was stunned when I refreshed my memory. Yes, I'm at that age where memories definitely need refreshing.
How do you choose between films such as the Indy Jones trilogy and Star Wars V and VI? between E.T. and Rain Man? between Tootsie and Ghostbusters? The Elephant Man and Raging Bull?
I am a film buff. I've loved movies all of my long life. But, I simply can't pick one; it's impossible for me to do that. So, I guess this won't count as an answer. Here are some of my favorites, in no particular order:
A Christmas Story (Who would have thought that the guy who made Porky's could make this annually-run treasure?!)
On Golden Pond
Blade Runner
The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai (Across the 8th Dimension!)
Dragonslayer (Vermithrax Pejorative~still the best dragon of all time!)
Ladyhawke
Driving Miss Daisy
A Passage to India
Raiders of the Lost Ark
E.T.
Raising Arizona
The Right Stuff
Pee-wee's Big Adventure
Beetlejuice
Back to the Future I and II
Airplane!
Die Hard
The Company of Wolves
Aliens
Excalibur
The Brother from Another Planet
Nightmare on Elm Street (Johnny Depp's film debut)
The Terminator
Footloose
Fright Night
Somewhere in Time
Desperately Seeking Susan
WarGames
The Dark Crystal
The Karate Kid
Dirty Dancing
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Fast Times at Ridgemont High (Think of the actors who graduated from this film!)
The Gods Must Be Crazy I and II
The Lost Boys
The NeverEnding Story
That's skimming the surface. Shame on me for ever badmouthing the Eighties! It's sad that most movie channels don't run the great stuff as much as they do the schlock.

C'mon, Big trouble in little China is class!!
Also Rambo First Blood
Commando!!! That's what the eighties was about! Mullets, action, explosions and cheesy one-liners!

There were some really great comedies made in the 80's...My 2 faves are Smokey & the Bandit & The blues brothers. These 2 had really great car chases & crashes & then the's the flyng nun, you've gotta see these!

Dont let anyone tell you that it was Raging Bull! The best was Back to the Future, followed by Raiders of the Lost Ark, Amadeus, and Crimes and Misdemeanors.

Raging Bull is hard to argue with there... but you might consider Kurasawa's Ran, which is a seriously epic work, full of beautiful acting and cinematography... and the little mentioned but quite great The Stunt Man.
