I was born in the 1930s. The only time I really had any hope was in the 60s, but then there was a war and there was not technology for living without raping nature though we did try and even had national magazines (Mother Earth News) in which to find ways that Do No Harm could become a reality.
I cannot remember a time when there was not a war or some part of the ecosystem was not being dissembled for profit. Now, we have medical and ecological technology that could stop the death of human beings and Nature. Instead, profit rules, and wars have become some kind of dark panacea to claim our attention while Nature and humanity dies.
A couple examples: The mountains being disappeared in West Virginia and the destruction of a people in Darfur.

I have. Since I have children and grandchildren, I feel I should be active in shaping the world if the future. This includes studying the past, religion, government, science, and generally being concerned with all aspects of life. Being active includes talking to people, writing to Senators and Congress, creating art, investigating laws and lawmakers, and mostly, being aware. Thank goodness we now have the Internet, it is the largest library ever conceived of, and will serve us well into the future.
