Increased gas consumption is one sign that there is something wrong with a car. But sometimes, it is also a sign that there is something wrong with the way the car is being operated. This may be hard to swallow, but most often, it's the driver, not the car.

If it's using more gas, not that it costs more, yes, something could be wrong. Have it checked at a good shop.

If there's an emission system problem, your fuel efficiency might suffer, which would explain why your car would seem to be using more gas. The O2 sensor should be able to detect that and light up the "check engine" light.

Sometimes is not the car but the driver with bad habits. One of the main reasons for fuel inefficiency is poor or no maintenance.
