Rolsy, I'm quite capable of stripping a laptop though my local pc shop didn't appear to want all the hassle last time I took it there with a wobbly power input jack... ended up stripping the lot to resolder the pins myself.

Good call though, I just didn't like the idea of it getting too warm, dont want to fry the chipset.

The fan will only come on when needed. You say that your machine is getting hot but is it shutting down at all? If the fan is working then it would indicate that your laptop needs a good hardware service. This entails dismantling the machine, removing all dust and debris from within, dismantling the fan housing and removing the build up of fluff etc. Lastly, an application of thermal paste to the processor.
Obviously this is not something you should do yourself but a reputable repair company will charge less than £100 to do it for you.

Normal operating temperate of a P4/Duel core is about 52c this can seem excessively hot to the touch

If the CPU were in danger of damage from over heating it the in built heat sensor would shut it down. Some give you a warning some don't.
