Gavril Princip, who assassinated the archduke in Sarajevo, was a Serb. At that time, Austria-Hungary ruled all the Slavic lands north of independent Serbia that later became Jugoslavia. Austria suspected that the Serbian government had put him up to it and demanded satisfaction. Russia saw itself as the protector of Serbia, and warned Austria. Germany was allied with Austria and backed Austria. Because of the interlocking systm of alliances, England, France, and Italy were with Russia. Very soon, all of these countries mobilized their armed forces.

Mobilization was a process whereby the reserves were called up, officers were brought out of retirement, railroads were commandeered to transport troops and equipment, and the first movements started toward the enemy's border. Once a country started mobilization, countries on the other side could not ignore it, because the country that started its wartime army moving first would win. So all countries mobilized. The time ran out for the various demands and ultimata that countries on the two sides had given one another, and the armies rolled.

The result was World War I, which ended in millions of deaths and the destruction of the Russian, German, and Austrian empires, as well as the creation of a new Jugoslavia by union of Serbia with the old Austrian south Slavic territories.

The assasination of Arch-Duke Ferdinand was the excuse Austria-Hungary used to attack an antagonisic and land-expanding Serbia, to quell the rumblings of nationhood and expand influnce into the Balkans.

Truth is actually stranger than fiction. The then Austro-Hungarian Emperor Franz Josef I, hated Arch-Duke Ferdinand for "marrying outside royalty" or a non-Hapsburg (they were the Royal Family of basically all of Europe) and MADE Ferdinand vow not to name his son succesor to the throne, as a result of this "offense." When the Emperor heard of the assasination of Ferdinand he said, "Perhaps this is God's way of making things right..." Eluding to the notion that God had Ferdinand killed to "keep the Royal and Holy bloodline of the Hapsburgs." Talk about a coldhearted bastard...

Meanwhile, off the coast of Northern Germany in Keil, the navies of Russia, Germany, France, Britian and some Austrian vessels were having a little party. They had a Regatta, or a boat race, infact George V King of England, his cousin the Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany, and another cousin who wasn't their the Tsarina Sophia of Russia, sent her nephew, were all in one yacht together that very hour!

When the telegram came, the Regatta was called off short.

Now, I'm getting back to Franz, but I'm going to setup the past for you, here is 50 years in 2 mins. The Ottoman Turks had been falling apart for nearly 100 years by this time. They couldn't hold on to their European lands, and by Treaty were bound to Austria-Hungary to cede any lands to them, instead of the Ottomans mortal enemy the Russians. Well, Russia wasn't having this and Britain agreed, that if Austria-Hungary got this land (which includes Bulgaria, Albania, Serbia, Monenegro, Macedonia, Bosnia-Herzegovina) then Austria-Hungary could dominate the Mediteranian Sea, via, Istanbul. Germany, insisted that Austria get it, because there was no way Germany and Austria-Hungary could compete with Britain in trade because of Britains huge navy fleet. However, if a railroad could go, uninhibited from Berlin to Viena to Istanbul to Baghdad, then Germany would be the dominant supplier of oil, textiles, and other oriental exotics in Europe and force Britian to lower prices and eventually starve their navy of usefulness. Also France, having been gutted and cleaned by Germany in the Franco-Prussian War wanted Alsace-Lorraine (a province on the German Border) back from Germany, as well as the colonial Central African territories and Chinese ports that Germany annexed and gained as a result of competition and conquest. Russia wanted Istanbul, and claimed to be the "Mother and Protector of all the Slavs." Russia had NO year-round port, during the winter, all of their ports froze over, but not Istanbul, besides that, they could transfer products to all of Europe, Africa, US, and Asia if this were accomplished. So all sides were looking for something to happen in this reguard.

Enter; the Ottoman Empire, Sarajevo, Serbia, Gavrilo Princip, Russia, Austria-Hungary, and Franz Josef. In 1914 the Ottoman Turks started to crack, so they cede the lands that make then and now, Albania, to be an "independent state" basically it was a little joint venture of Austria-Hungary and the Ottomans to keep it out of Serbia and Russia's hands. Then, the Ottomans cede the rest of the surrounding lands to Austria-Hungary and but the Serbs from the sea, and throws everyone else in a panic, because all that left was Istanbul, and the Ottomans were barely holding that. Now Serbia was pissed, and went to Russia, and Russia pretty much told them, "tell us about it, we've been getting screwed the past 100 years by the Germans, Austrians, and Ottomans...but if they ever, EVER attack you, there will be hell to pay." Now, after this happened, guess who decides to survey the newly aquired land? Arch-Duke Franz Ferdinand, not only does he dare come to this "Serbian Screwjob land" he comes on one of the holiest and patriotic days to the Slavs, and parades around in his new car and waving his little flag. (Imagine binLaden driving through NYC on the 4th of July, yeah, Franz was that stupid.) So, Princip's friends try to lob a grenade at him, but the grenade bounces off the car and hits a few guards. So the ever stupid Ferdinand, decides after all the fanfare to go visit the injured guards, well his driver, is no genius either, he takes a wrong turn... Right infront of a cafe were the sulking Princip was just lamenting over his comrades screw up, he sees the Arch-Duke, he probably nearly pisses himself in astonishment and glee, but not before he puts three caps in the Royal Family.. Both Sophia and Franz die. Well Austria-Hungary is pissed, but not for killing Franz, but for killing an Austrian, Germany sees this as the chance to take out both Russian backed Serbia AND gain Istanbul, so they fan the flames, Russia sees a diversion from national rebellion and possibility of gaining Istanbul through ally or conquest, so their game too. France and Britian see the heat and for similar reasons assure Russia they have their back, and at the same time see all the money to be made-and-lost so they chime in too!

Here is the funny or ironic part, the Serbian army never shows up to fight... The Russians are stuck defending their ally's country, and Austria-Hungary gets bogged down with stupidity, so Germany has to come to the rescue, then Britain and France hit Germany from the front, just to find out Germany hit them from the side (Belgium.) So Britain decides to knock out the Ottomans, sooner than later, and the Ottomans, despite having 1/5th the weapons they need to arm their troops, and not even enough ammo for 2 bullets in each gun, knock the Brits off! Then, Russia quits, and the US, Italy, Rumania and Japan join, on the same side!

Franz's death, lit the wick for WWI, which led to the collapse of 4 monarchies; the Ottoman, Russian, German, and Austro-Hungarian. It also split the Middle East, Africa, and the Balkans into countries, and made the policies that lead to the debacles they are today in those very regions.

So, Franz's death ended a lineage of Empires that were a 1,000 years old, and has caused other shortcomings to be the issues and conflicts that the world is engaged in today.
