I know this guy who has no right hand. Not so bad except for he is the type of person who likes to 'talk with his hands'. This poses an interesting scenario and there is absolutely no way of avoiding the stump. I'm not even sure he realizes how this effects people.
Point is...there is no way to avoid staring. I mean...what the hell else would you do.

Choose something better to focus on, like the eyes. It works for me. You can train yourself to ignore things about a person. I would give the same advice if your boss's girlfriend had "disturbingly large breasts". (wink)

Say, "You know, scarves are really in fashion this season and there are so may complimentary colors to accent any outfit! "
Then pull a selection from out of your pocket. "LIke this one here for an example. It's blue and goes well with your eyes. Here, let's wrap it around your neck.
Ahh, now doesn't that look nice? You may have these other four scarves too. One for each day of the (work) week!"
