You need to know the IP addresses of the systems...
At a run prompt, type mstsc and hit enter
This will bring up Remote Desktop Connection. You put in the IP Address of the system you want to get into (system must have a username with a password) and the port number for remoting in windows XP like this
192.168.2.2:3389 <-- this is the default port.
Also, you must have remote desktop turned on on both of the machines. You do so in control panel, system, remote tab.
There is an option when your in Remote desktop on the local resources tab to share the local hard drives. When you do this, you can connect and share between both computers.
Alternatively, you can setup file sharing to share between systems. All you do is right click a folder you want to share on the network, click the sharing option, then check the box for share this folder.
Then you give it a name and you'll be able to map to it on the other system by going to my computer, tools, map network drive. It will ask you for the location of the drive and you enter:
\
And then you give it a drive letter like Z: and you can share files across that shared point. Whatever you put in that folder will be available from both systems.

Simply buy a crossover lan cable. Ensure that you have on board LAN (10/100 or 10/1000), otherwise u need to get two PCI lan cards. Install the LAN driver. Connect both the computers through the LAN cable.
If u r using Windows XP OS then insert it and click on perform additional tasks> setup small or home office network and follow the instructions. after u finish the installation choose use my windows xp CD in other computer & click on finish.
Run the same setup on the 2nd computer. Restart both the computers u can notice two computers icon in the notification area of the taskbar.
Now u need to share the partitions/ files by right clicking on it > sharing, on both the computers.
you can now view each shared folders/partitions by clickin on my network places.

Just use the wizard to set both machines to the same workgroup name and give them each a simple computer name. Open the exception for file and printer sharing in each firewall. Right click any folders or printers you wish to make available and set them shared. On any Vista machines, go to tcp/ip properties for your card, in advanced click the wins tab and set always use netbios over tcp/ip and turn off use lmhosts. This is essential to browsing, so Microsoft set it to turn off if it sees a dhcp server. Great considering all routers run dhcp. It can take up to 20 minutes for the machines to appear in the network browser. You can view the machines in your workgroup, and double click to see the shared folders and printers. double-click a printer to install it locally.
