its not bruised just very swollen..should he see a dr., if so what kind?

I would elevate on a pillow and apply ice. If he cannot walk I would see a orthopedic or sports medicine doctor. in the meanwhile have him stay off it as much as possible

He needs to go to a Sports Medicine orthopedist (not an orhopedic surgeon) which is usually part of a clinic with Physical Therapists, etc.

You go see your regular doc first and they will refer you if you need more care than he can provide. Yes he needs to see the doc.

go to the er NOW he may have a blood clot or some thang more serores
