someone told me it was jellyfish but I never saw jellyfish that looked like that and wondered if they still stung when dead?

They probably are jellies washed up from the higher tides. I've seen a few out at Hatteras even in normal weater conditions that were washed up (maybe caught up in some of the algae that was floating that was washed up as well).

No, once they're dead they can't sting, but when they're out of the water, you can't tell for certain that these are dead - most types don't move around on their own (and those that do use a "pulsating" motion), they just float with the current.

Jellyfish. Look them up on the Internet, some are clear or very close to it. I was told you could still be stung, but I don't know for sure. I just know when I see them I don't try to find out. I just walk around them.

they are most likely jellyfish. usually if they are completely clear it means they are dead and they wont be able to sting you. if the jellyfish still has color in it, stay away!

if so, then they were jellyfish - and yes, they can sting after they are washed up
