originally almost all computers were internal and the only external parts were the mouse, keyboard and printer. but nowadays you can add almost any external part you want such as a harddrive and you can get a keyboard as an internal. In the beginning of pc's you had to buy a computer with all the parts installed that you wanted. they were all connected to the mother board so if you wanted a cd burner you had to buy them as part of the computer or at least make sure there was a slot to hook it into if you added it later but today it is all to easy to add stuff so i think that internal is whatever is inside the computer box and external is whatever is outside and usually hooked up by a usb cord.
