I am from the states, I think the level of football is horrible. I know that when teams come over on summer tours the MLS all stars always play well, but having said that they are lesser sides put forth from the powerhouse teams and the All Stars are the best players from all the teams. Thoughts?

It's probably comparable to second tier English football (The Championship). The biggest problem with the comparison is MLS' salary cap structure. MLS won't have its own version of Man U or Chelsea because the salary cap prevents a club from holding onto a bunch of high-priced players on the roster.

i.e. The LA Galaxy (albeit a lousy club this season) has to either trade Landon Donovan or trade for a second designated player slot to keep him on the roster next season. Unless the rules change...

But at least a lousy club can change their fortunes quickly with the salary cap. Look at Chivas USA who was the worst club two seasons ago and they were first place in the Western Conference on Friday.

So you pretty much have to compare a middle of a pack MLS club like NY, Chicago or Kansas City with an English league... I would say those clubs would have a yearly struggle to stay in the Championship league though they somehow survive relegation.

The best MLS teams would be considered bottom of the table EPL teams, but that is a compliment. Athleticism-wise I'd say MLS is comparable to any league, but talent wise... that's a different story. The MLS just doesn't have the support and it isn't really getting much bigger, it's just spending more money.

I would think that the average Football Team (Soccer to you Yanks) from America would struggle to stay in the lowest division of the English Football League.
