I am considering applying for a part-time basic sales associate position for flooring/carpeting at either Home Depot or Lowe's. Do I have to be an expert at flooring and installation to get this job? How much flooring experience do I need or do they train you while on-the-job?

Thanks!

They would likely train you. My brother used to work in the lumber department at Home Depot, and he had no experience prior to that.

I worked at HD part time in hardware and had only moderate experience. I'd worked with my husband doing home projects. The training I got consisted of OJT help from a co-worker.

My friend was a manager at Home Depot. They are happy to get clean, sober people that occasionally smile. They will be happy to teach you all you need to know. PS: Home Depot stores are fined by the home office if they have any employees injured on the job. If you are involved in any accident they drive you to the nearest hosp. for treatment and a drug test.

They may be willing to train you in calculating sq. feet and sq. yds. from measurements. In most cases, this may be done for you, as a sales person, by outside estimators.
You need to learn that, and they may train you. Sometimes a customer brings their own measurements, never accurate and cannot be accepted, but you can offer a rough estimate.
I did estimating for both companies at one time, after retirement, Florida. I'm in TX. now.

You do have to learn how installation is performed. There are many details and "pitfalls" that have to be considered. Estimators make note of these in detail.

Rarely do I actually see anybody there that has any idea whatsoever about the department they work in. You'll fit right in.
