When I am not on my computer I have my screen saver set to come on after 5 minutes and the monitor is to turn off after 30.

Every time I then go to use the computer again after it has been inactive for a while I have an icon showing as active. Whatever icon I have sitting above the start menu is always blinking and highlighted as though it's being clicked on to start running. Nothing is actually running when I look at my applications through the task manager. It brings up something to save in my documents and then won't let me save or cancel anything... I have to restart my computer to make it stop. I have tried changing the icons around and such just to see what happens and it doesn't matter. There is always an icon doing this when I go to use it. It brings up my desktop in the middle of the night sometimes and when I go to check it it's doing this...

Any idea what this is? Why it's happening? How to stop it?

i would try running a scan with antivirus (avg is free) spybot search and destroy (also free)
ad-ware. u may have picked up malware or spyware. run a scan with each of these
if they dont find anything you can always restart to a date before this started or make backup of your files you need and throw the windows or startup disk in and reboot and reformat
gl to you

In addition to running a virus check, run a spyware check. A lot of those programs will start running when you connect to the Internet in order to send info to their home site, and will only shut off when you shut the computer down.

What version of windows are you using? Old systems have problems with hibernation . restarting. Sounds too benign to be a virus, but you ran a virus scan, right?

Sounds like a virus. Have you run a virus scan?
