Larry Talbot. After his older brother dies, Larry returns to his father's castle from America because he's now the heir. He hits on a pretty village girl and takes her out to the gypsy camp to get their fortunes read. The gypsy sees the sign of the pentagram in their friend's palm and screams at them to leave as they are in danger. But it's too late as the gypsy's son, who is a werewolf, kills the girl and bites Larry. Larry kills the werewolf by beating him with his silver tipped cane. After being bitten Larry turns into a werewolf and is eventually killed by his father with the same cane which has the silver head of a wolf on it. "Even he who is pure at heart and says his prayers at night, can become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms and the moon is full at night."

The most famous "werewolf" is the classic "Wolf Man" portrayed by Lon Cheney Jr. While there have been many others throughout modern media - including werewolves portrayed in the films, Underworld, Underworld: Evolution, Teen Wolf, Ginger Snaps, I Was a Teenage Werewolf, and the Howling -series ...none have quite established an iconic werewolf figure like Lon Cheney's original rendition of this character.

I would have to say Lon Chaney Jr. He portrayed lawrence talbot and I consider him the master of werewolf potrayal. Micheal J Fox was also good as the teenage wolf and seth green rocked as oz on buffy the vampire slayer but to me they fail in comparison compared to lon chaney Jr. After all during the 1930,s and 40,s the wolfman, dracula, and frankenstein were considered the ultimate horror movies like the grudge and texas chainsaaw massacre of today. The dude the that played the american werewolf in london was good but I can,t remember his name. Oh and if you have seen wolfen with jack nicholas in it that should have been promoted as a comedy instead of a horror flick. Nicholas was about as scary as bela lugosi in a dress.

In 1930's movies, the terrible trio was Count Dracula the vampire, Frankenstein's monster (not Victor Frankenstein himself) was reantimated parts of various bodies and Lawrence Talbot was the original werewolf.

If you can consider Frankenstein's monster a zombie, then Mr. Hyde is a werewolf.

The classical werewolf is not a wolf, nor a man, and Mr. Hyde is neither a man nor an animal....

(As I said- if you can consider Frankenstein's creation a zombie, then Mr. Hyde is a good parallel to the werewolf.)
