"From each according to his abilities to each according to his needs" is the classic simple description. This is more or less the way families work but even in a family you need an authority figure to monitor behavior and prevent cheating. When the concept is applied to a large society the monitoring needed to prevent cheating turns it into a police state.

Communism is great....on paper

Everyone contributes toward the benefit of everyone

Too bad it goes against human nature. There are too many people that are lazy or greedy to let communism work in any large scale setting.

the simplest explanation for me is

in communism , the state owns everything.
and the state determines how everything is distributed.
there is no private ownership.
