Yes. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. It instantly helps the viewer visualize the story it tells. The one showing or viewing the picture is greatly aided by the visual. Triggers memories and cuts way down on the explanation

I think that it is more that every picture (like a book) can be construed to mean a very many-different-thing in the eyes of he who studies it.

Yeah, I guess so...but there is always more to the story to the person who is in the picture or who took it, than to those who you are showing it to....if that makes sense.
