I need to get new anti-virus software for my laptop. I'm running XP Home with a 20G hard drive. I also have an external hard drive so I don't keep excess pictures and files on the laptop. I was recommended AVG by a friend of a friend, but some of the reviews I've read have said it's not very user friendly. I've always used Norton but have read that it really slows the computer down. I also saw that Bit Defender has good reviews, but I'm just not sure if it offers as much protection as Norton Internet Security. If I go with Norton, which I might because that's what I'm familiar with, then it would be Internet Security, not just the Anti-Virus program. Another thing I'm trying to keep in mind is price, of course. Norton only offers one year whereas some of the others come with 2 year subscriptions. Thanks!

The best anti-virus is ESET NOD32 then Kaspersky. NOD32 is the only anti-virus that got an Advanced+ rating in tests conducted at http://www.av-comparatives.org/
The most popular free anti-virus programs (AVG and Avast) have poor detection rates (82.82%, 87.46% respectively). Norton is notoriously bloated and takes forever to perform full systems scans.
I only recommend buying NOD32 (advanced users) or Kaspersky. It has been proven these products are better than the best sellers (Norton and McAfee):

The best AV Software currently on the market is a Finnish product. It is developed by F-Secure and is highly recommended. One major bank gives F-Secure to it's customers. It is not resource hungry, like Norton. It does not allow virus' onto your computer before detection, unlike Norton and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to buy it. I was also a favourite of Norton, ten years ago but since Symantec got their grubby profiteering hands on it, Norton has gone downhill fast. Norton once had a detection rate of 98%, today it's less than 90% and McAffee is no better. Norton also causes many conflicts and is extremely difficult to remove. AVG (free version) is fine as an emergency AV application but is better if the full versio9n is paid for. However, for the best detection rates, with daily updates, not weekly / monthly like others, the best option is F-Secure.

After some years of making use of loose A/V and anti malware I put in a Norton trial cyber web secure practices 2012 on my daughters and granddaughters computers.I continually felt Norton replaced right into a brilliant source hog however the main contemporary version replaced into notably better. lots so as that when 3 months I even have put in it on my pc which seems notably greater responsive. My decision now till some thing greater advantageous comes alongside.whether in case you decide on loose then i choose to propose Avast , superantispyware and Malwarebytes. coupled with Comodo firewall they're all loose for inner maximum use . that is secure to apply 2 anti-undercover agent products yet under no circumstances use greater advantageous than one A/V because it may reason conflicts. you will desire to run A/V and anti undercover agent weekly.

I say norton you can get a 3 user pack at compusa.com for like ten bucks after rebates and its good for 3 computers so you can lend it to your friends. Ive been using norton for a while now and it does pretty good, i havent had problems with it slowing my computer down and i run vista. Internet security is a good one that i recomend because it has good protection when youre wirelessly connected to a network but for wireless connection security nothing beats MCAfee but they really REALLY slow your computer down.

Avoid AVG Free.
AVG Anti-Virus is crap!
Mostly noobs, the naive, the computer illiterate, and children use AVG Free. People of their ilk love AVG because they say it is easy to use and almost never bothers them with any pop-ups or warnings. Of course AVG Free never bothers them, it hardly ever finds any virus to warn them about!
In test,

http://winnow.oitc.com/AntiVirusPerformance.html
etc. etc. etc, ad nauseam, AVG fares poorly.
AVG has proven itself to be a miserable performer at best. Missing almost 20%, while trying to detect known malware, in some tests. Not to mention almost non-existent heuristic detection and infrequent "once-a day" updates.
AVG. = Average, at best!

I would suggest Avira AntiVir® PersonalEdition Classic. It has excellent heuristics, a virus detection rate that is better than many of "paid-for" anti-virus programs and is light on using your computer's resources. And did I mention that it's free!
