That question is sort of difficult to answer. Is the news media giving people what they want or are the people eating up what the news media gives them? I think it's a bit of both, frankly.

The reason this may be more interesting right now is because of the irony that OJ might actually go to jail for something so stupid after having skated, many think, on the murders of Nicole & Ron.

All media in the U.S., with the exception of NPR and the Voice of America, is commercial. That means they have to sell ad space, either in print or in electronic presentations, to stay in business. Most of the TV news operations already know that the key "demographic" for selling goods and services are females between 18 and 40 years of age. To attract and hold that audience, they need to keep their attention and make sure they don't change channels. There have also been studies done which show that a high percentage of celebrity worshippers are also compulsive shoppers. Karl Marx once said that religion was the opiate of the people. Now it can be shown that celebrity news is the opiate of the "mall molly".

Yes, because they know people are watching. If we all decide to stop viewing their programs when O.J. is on and complain to the proper authorities, then they might air stories on him only when they should. I am no longer watching because I have to turn it when they show or state what he said in interviews. He is not supposed to be talking and no decent reporter should be asking him questions without his lawyer's permission/presence. It is like giving someone some shellfish, fully knowing they are allergic and then excusing it with "well, he/she said they wanted it".

because its what the people want. They've done test groups and studies on this, they whole heartedly believe that the mass public want sensationalism.
