Okay.

I'm going to try to cover both sides here. If they are imagined, then the reason they are so widely controversial, and why some of the sightings are probably authentic, is because they really are government hoaxes. They could keep people distracted from the real "news" by getting them all pumped up on aliens. The "real" news has to do with the terrorist and crimes committed by our own government. So UFOs and such would just be yet another form of media lies and distraction that we are bombarded with on TV and Radio.

If they ARE real, which is what I've always felt, and the government is just trying to cover them up... then their exposure is STILL secondary to the situation we have with our own government. We should not be concerned with other species when our own is a complete, corrupt mess. The government is NOT going to disclose anything that could empower the civilians, so until the government is handled, lets forget about the UFOs and focus on them, yeah?

doug_donaghue - I just believe that the universe is too huge for us to make any judgements about wether or not we are the only ones living in it. That would be arrogant and ignorant. I don't necessarily believe they have made contact, though, I think its likely.

quantumclaustro - Damn right, I'm getting out of this place as soon as possible, and that might not even save me. I really CAN NOT fathom that someone would disagree that our government is a corrupt pile of sh**.

The universe is big. I agree it seems unlikely we are its sole inhabitants.

However, if life exists it is most likely to do so on the surface of some planet or large moon, rather than in the interstellar voids. And if it began on some world like our own, the distance separating worlds is vast.

Imagine how much it costs to travel from Kansas to England vs. how much it costs to place a call. I mean, if you think of a one time trip, you have to build yourself a yacht or an airplane vs. building a HAM radio and bouncing a signal off the ionosphere.

Now imagine that cost difference magnified by about a billion. Far cheaper to communicate with extraterrestrials over radio. They may very well visit neighboring star systems, perhaps even sending out self replicating autonomous space craft. But personal voyages over extended reaches of space remains pretty unlikely, especially without a real firm concept of one's destination.

When Columbus sailed around the world, hoping to reach the backside of India, he thought our globe was much smaller than it actually is. His mathematical prowess was less than that of Eratosthenes, who accurately measured the earth 1700 years earlier.

Columbus did not imagine his voyage would be a one way trip. For us, interstellar travel would very likely be one way. Technological advances about a thousand times current levels would be required to even attempt manned interstellar voyages. For star hopping we would need vastly superior technology yet.

Our hypothetical extraterrestrials have probably never visited earth. For that matter, the furthest our radio broadcasts have reached is about 100 light years--not even half the distance to the north star--which is practically right in our back yard.

There is a book called "Little Green Men" by Christopher Buckley that you will probably find interesting. It is political satire about the government using UFOs as a distraction as you stated. You should at least check out the synopsis on Amazon.

Do you really believe that our government (or, for that matter, any other government) could keep a secret that big for as many years as it's claimed?
I have no doubt that there are such things as UFO's. And that means 'Unidentified Flying Objects'. It does --not-- automatically mean spaceships and little green men.

UFOs like any Myth--or mystery sells book's--to make money--and if they did exist--they would be so advanced--compared to human technology--that we would be about to understand them--we would be as insects to them
