No folks really. Why don't we just take the pauchecks and put all of them in one big melting pot and let the Government dole out what we need when they feel we need it. Oh wait a second we already have that (it's called taxes).

The last time I looked at my pay stub I was still paying for SS, medicare/medicade so why is that a "giveaway" if I have paid into it for 40+ years?
I paid my share over the years and expect to get it back when it is my time to use it
How is that an "entitlement" if I paid for it?
Perhaps we should not have socialized education - why should I pay for some elses dumb-azz kids or anybody elses for that matter? Mine are grown and I could give a crap less about yours!
How about the socialized police, fire and rescue services in your town?
How about socialized medicine for ALL federal government employees, military and most state employees?
How about socialized national park system, the Interstate highway system - how about NASA, the coast guard and the other Armed Services?
Those are all socialized evils too aren't they or are we to throw away only the programs you do not like?

Because fixing, though they do need it, Medicare and Medicaid won't cover the 47 million who don't qualify for them.
Whatever needs to be done to bring everyone health care of some kind to this country.
No, no one gets a car or a house.
You know, it amazes me. You make it sound like you (republicans) are the only ones paying taxes.
I pay close to 30% in taxes at each of my jobs. And as long as those taxes are going to help those in THIS country, I don't have a problem with it. And no, I can't afford health insurance. Minimum for me would be $8,600 every year. And that is only for the monthly premiums and deductable.
Something would be better than nothing.

This is the most common misundertanding about progressive philosophy (and economics in general) liberals see from conservatives.
You see, nothing is free. It always costs something. But conservatives count on markets to meet social needs, despite market failures in every social need for thousands of years.
Conservatives are always protecting the wealth of the aristocracy and letting the masses eat cake in their trailer parks while calling it even. Well, the massive national and private debt should've tipped conservatives off a long time ago that their philospophy isn't working.
Conservatives never learn.

I get "free" police protection (I actually pay through taxes of course) because it makes sense to have a common defense against threats to our lives and wealth. Sickness and injury pose the same threat, so I am willing to pay taxes to provide a defense against those things also.
Those who don't trust the government to provide for their protection against crime or sickness can use private security services or private medical services. Private and "free public" medical services can coexist just as private and public security does.
Fixing existing systems is good also, and free public medical service may be just the fix. Free public medical service is what many people need to be able to save enough to buy their own car or house. Sickness or injury, or just the cost of health insurance, takes away their ability to save the money they would need to buy a car or house.
A smart capitalist should see a benefit in more people forming their own private businesses. More people would be willing to do so if they didn't have to hang onto a job that provides health benefits (often a government job) to be sure the health care needs of their families and themselves are provided for.

I make a good living, so I can support me, my family, and the extended family that the government confiscates my money for in the form of taxes. I'm just waiting for it to pay good enough to sit on my rump, then I'll join in and be part of the "early retirement" socialist crowd. As it stands, if you are poor, with poor planning, and/or lazy, you get:
Funding for your children
Food Stamps
Section 8 Housing
Free Medical Care
Free schooling
Free school breakfast and lunch
If someone had to earn money to pay for that (someone = taxpayers in reality), what would the untaxed income be for the person sitting at home with 3 kids?

Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security may all be in need of reforms, but they all work better than any private medical insurance or pension plan. Just compare the administrative costs vs. benefits of any private plan to these government plans and you will see that they are all far more efficiently run.

Sorry no can do... we're already tapped out from the freebies this administration has given to all the automobile, airline, energy, and healthcare industries.
How can we take care of our own population and ensure a strong healthy populace from which we cull our leaders, teachers, students, and soldiers when we're too busy giving money away to the fat *** millionaires and their companies?

The only reason I work is for the medical benefits. When it's 'free', can I quit working? When I can't afford everything else I need eg food, clothing, heat, will that be free too?
